BOAC ordered the Boeing 747 in 1966. The first aircraft was delivered in May 1970, but the initial three aircraft sat idle at Heathrow for a year due to an industrial dispute with the airline's pilots. BOAC's first commercial 747 service flew on 14 April 1971, and a daily LHR-JFK round-trip service commenced operation, with a "W" pattern LHR-JFK-BDA-JFK-LHR route starting on 9th May 1971.
BOAC and the state-owned regional carrier British European Airways were merged effective 31 March 1974 to form British Airways.
