747 Classic Cockpit Layouts

The 747 Classic was built during a time when customer airlines (and in particular their Chief Pilots) had a big say in the cockpit layout and avionics fit of their aircraft. Now aircraft are built in a sausage factory with standardization a key to keeping costs down. In the 60s and 70s things were very different and the result is a wide variety of differences in cockpit configuration on the 747 Classic. As time has gone by, as new regulatory mandates have come into force, ATC required the addition of new equipment, or as technology has advanced operators have made further modifications leading to a bewildering number of options.
